Center Industries recently purchased a CMM during the first week of July. CMM is short for Coordinate Measuring Machine. The CMM is a programmable instrument used to collect and report on precise dimensional data for virtually any type of manufactured component like Boeing window frames and various other parts for the aircraft industry. Measuring a Boeing Doubler used to take several hours. Now it only takes about 15 minutes with the CMM. The machine collects its data by touching a component with a calibrated probe and records the location of these touch points by using either a joystick or the computer keyboard. It can measure any object up to 40" x 40" x 32", has the capability to move 31 inches per second, and a measuring repeatability capacity on all axes of 0.00010 inches or 1.3 microns.
The computer is user friendly, has Windows based programs, and it is compatible with other aircraft company programs. The machine includes a Pneumatic Anti-Vibration system located beneath its base and an air dryer system for regulating air quality. The machine has scanning or "reverse engineering" capabilities as well. It can scan a part then generate cutter path programs to produce it and create CAD drawings to document it. The Coordinate Measuring Machine can measure and produce quality parts in a fraction of the time then previously used methods.
